Chocolate cake without frosting is just sad; likewise, chocolate cake cookies without frosting are clearly missing something important. Cream cheese frosting is important. Sprinkles are important.
The cookies were soft and tender, as cake should be. Despite a full container of sour cream, they weren’t overly rich, and their chocolate flavor was more than subtle, less than overpowering. (I like overpowering.) They might seem plain and homely on their own, but that’s nothing that a dollop of frosting can’t fix.
Spike chose these for Tuesdays with Dorie, and she has the full recipe posted. I chilled the dough for about an hour before baking to reduce spreading. I also left out the raisins and spices so that the cookies would mimic a classic chocolate cake.

Love the festive jimmies!
So maybe I am missing something but I’m confused. You said something about sour cream and it sounded like it was in the cookie/cake recipe? But in the recipe I don’t see sour cream listed but then there are raisins?? And is the cream cheese frosting just cream cheese or did you use something else since the original recipe used pb inside. Your cookies look so much better than the others referenced so I was wanting to make your version exactly. Sorry for my confusion!
Jenny – That’s right, I forgot about the raisins in the original recipe. I left those out, as well as the spices. (I’ve updated my post to include this information.) Sour cream is listed in the original recipe; it’s the second-to-last ingredient, right before the raisins. The cream cheese frosting was a combination of cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar.
I’m with you…chocolate cake/cookies…needs frosting. Love this version
Always frosting with chocolate cake/cookies 🙂
Love the festive sprinkles! I thought about cream cheese frosting as a filling, it seems to go perfectly with the mild chocolate cake cookies!
I thought they were too plain by themselves. I left out the raisins since I knew I was going to pair them with something. I made cinnamon marshmallow fluff frosting and made sandwiches. They were so good!!
cream cheese does make everything better!
Yes, these cookies definitely needed something. They weren’t bad, but frosting would have definitely helped a lot. Love the swirl.
Frosting makes everything better. So do sprinkles.
these were cyring out for a filling. cream cheese frosting with sprinkles sounds perfect–happy independence day weekend!
